Hazard Alley help to set the standard
Hazard Alley in Milton Keynes is one of the UK's leading interactive Safety Training Centres and is widely recognised as a beacon of excellence and best-practice in LASER and Safety Training throughout the UK.
During Spring 2005 Hazard Alley became the latest Safety Training Centre to discover the benefits of using the Flying Colours Online Service during successful pilots across a number schools.
Hazard Alley director Jan Alder says "Using Flying Colours is one of the most important steps we have taken in Hazard Alley's development for a long time. It gives us concrete statistics that help us to identify how well our safety messages are being retained by pupils."
"This is of huge benefit, but we have also found that taking the safety quizzes reinforces these important messages as the pupils revisit them each time they take a quiz."
"A further benefit to us is that we can see where we can improve Hazard Alley's performance. We have high hopes that this information will help us to make Hazard Alley even more effective in future."
Encouraging Sponsors
Martin Chapman, Chief Fire Officer, Dorset Fire and Rescue Service describes the benefits of Flying Colours evaluation service to the Streetwise safety training centre in Bournemouth:
"We know that life skill awareness is so important for our young people as they grow up in our society and we know that 'Streetwise' is able to provide this service. "
" ... What has been difficult to ascertain in the past is a measurement of how much knowledge children have absorbed through their visit."
"The online safety quizzes provide a fun way of measuring this improvement and also provide valuable information for both Streetwise, schools and the emergency services in the improvement of life skill awareness."
"These results clearly quantify the value of visits to Streetwise and they can also be used as a useful tool for encouraging sponsors in funding future school visits."
Get pupils thinking about your safety messages
Another typical example of the popularity of the Flying Colours Evaluation Service was provided by the pupils at St. Mary's School, Puddletown. They were characteristically enthusiastic about the online safety quizzes ahead of their visit to the Streetwise safety centre in Bournemouth. The pre-visit quizzes were a great success, capturing the pupils' interest in safety issues and inspiring many to look forward to their visit to Streetwise and to the post-visit quizzes with the chance to improve their scores and try to beat their classmates.
"This is an exciting and stimulating activity for pupils to undertake and it reinforces the excellent messages that Streetwise give to our young citizens. Our pupils are visiting Streetwise next week and completing the on-line questionnaire has got them all thinking about safety issues."
A number of the pupils enjoyed themselves so much that they asked if they could do more of the fun safety quizzes either right away or later at home on their own PCs. While sadly, this isn't possible at the moment, it is an area that we may develop in the future.
